Developing High Functioning Teams

G. Ross Lawford in his article Beyond Success: Achieving Synergy in Teamwork stated: I think it is usually assumed that teams produce teamwork. This is not so. Just because a group of people are designated as a team is no guarantee that they will work together effectively, as anyone who follows sports knows. Teamwork is the competitive advantage in today's world; it is truly powerful and rare.

Think about a winning sports team or a well-rehearsed orchestra. Think about the commitment and energy the team of participants demonstrated. What you observed was team synergy, a phenomenon that occurs when a team achieves greater results than the sum of its parts. The benefits of team synergy are great – higher performance and greater results.

To reap the benefits of team synergy, we need to understand what dysfunction in a team looks like so we can facilitate positive group behavior.
